jetpens haul and review - handlettering and bullet journal supplies

I have been a shameless pen collector all my life. I have boxes upon boxes of pens that probably don't even work anymore, yet I can't shame myself into throwing them away. Such is life for a stationery aficionado.

A small portion of my pen collection... Trust me, there is plenty more. This is just what's readily accessible at my desk.

That being said, Jetpens.com became a blip in my radar recently and I wanted to give them a shot. Usually I do all my pen shopping in-person (hell-ooooo, who can resist doodling on those test paper pads in Staples? Not I!), but for free shipping over $25 (it is easy peasy to do that, trust me) I thought JetPen might be a great option to try things less readily accessible.

These opinions are all my own, I bought these with my own money, yada yada yada. I've also ranked them from "MOST FAVORITE EVER!!!!" to "meh, alright" for your browsing pleasure. Enjoy!

   Pentel Fude Touch Brush Sign Pen - Gray (PENTEL SES15C-N)
   I can't believe how affordable this pen was! It makes the variance in line weight for upward and downward strokes STUPID simple, and comes in a variety of pretty colors. Black was sold out when I purchased, so I opted for gray and I'm more than satisfied with this alternative. I'm really considering going back and buying the whole rainbow.

   Pilot Futayaku Double-Sided Brush Pen - Fine / Medium - Black Ink (PILOT SVW-20KSN-B)
   This pen comes as a one-two punch. Not only is the thicker side perfect for larger lettering, but the dual-ended tips allow you to create really versatile designs with one single pen. The black on the thicker end wasn't as rich as the thinner one, but I actually preferred it that way. I felt like it allowed for building of opacity really nicely.

   Uni Jetstream Standard Ballpoint Pen - 0.38 mm - Black Ink - Black Body (UNI SXN15038 .24)
   Being someone who writes a lot, I decided I needed some thinner pens for my bullet journal that I bring with me everywhere. The tiny point on this little guy did the trick. This pen is retractable, but the clicky part isn't as dreamy as my beloved Bic Atlantis. I'm willing to forgive that, though, because the writing is smooth and thin, just like I needed it to be.

   Pilot FriXion Point 04 Gel Pen - 0.4 mm - Black (PILOT LF-22P4-B)
   First of all, if you've never heard of a FriXion pen, you're in for a treat. They're like the upgraded versions of those crappy "erasable pens" of the 90's that really just left a smear in place of a word. This erasable pen is truly erasable, and the best part is-- the eraser doesn't wear down! Because it disappears from heat caused by friction, the rubber tip is damn near impossible to destroy. You'll want to be careful with keeping documents written with this pen out of the extreme climates, though.

   Kuretake Fudegokochi Brush Pen - Regular (KURETAKE LS1-10)
   We're now edging into the territory of "meh." I had one of these pens already. I ended up getting this one, not knowing that, and now it seems my annoyance of accidentally buying the same pen has made me dislike this pen more. The brush tip is fine, doesn't seem to be too flimsy or stiff, or wear down any quicker than others, but the ink in this guy seems to pool like no other! If you're not careful, this pen can really make a mess.

   Pilot Pocket Brush Pen - Soft (PILOT P-SV-30KS-B)
   I was expecting to L-O-V-E LOVE this pen. I don't. The brush tip is way too long, way too soft, and just overall really hard to control. It seems like the tip will fall out of the barrel any second! If you do very rough sketchy handlettering, this might suit your needs better...but for my usual flourishes and femininity it didn't quite fit the bill.

   Platinum Preppy Fountain Pen - Black and Green - 05 Medium Nib (PLATINUM PPQ-200 1-3)
   I was SOOOO excited to try a fountain pen. I went on Jetpen's blog area and found a fountain pen guide and picked a few. I'm really disappointed in them! I thought the ink was very unreliable. I found that the nib tended to pool the ink at the tip much more than necessary and lots of my writing bled through a standard page, which is not ideal for me. These were total busts, and I'm kind of upset about it :(

   Pilot Petit1 Mini Fountain Pen - Clear Blue - Fine Nib (PILOT SPN-20F-CL)
   This pen, aside from being another fountain pen, was too tiny for my hands to hold it properly. It's very cute, don't get me wrong. As someone with average size hands for a woman, I couldn't get it to write the way I wanted without having to reposition my grip every 3 letters. Not for me.
